Davy Jones died today, February 29, of a heart attack. He was 66 years old. As fans know, Davy worked with Nilsson numerous times over the years, singing Harry's songs in the late 60s with The Monkees, in the 70s as part of the UK stage production for The Point! and in a series of Japanese TV commercials Ringo Starr made for Simple Life leisure suits. For many of a certain age - those who just missed out on Beatlemania - The Monkees were an entry point into both music and group idolatry, and Davy should always be fondly remembered for his charm, professionalism and good vibes.
Interested in some really obscure Nilsson covers? There a site called FONOS, which digitizes Dutch LPs to CDs (in agreement with multinational record companies). A cursory search of Nilsson will turn up a handful of Dutch artists covering Harry's material, mostly from the 60s. Click the titles to hear colorful, pop-up snippets of Nobody Cares About The Railroads Anymore, The Puppy Song, Good Old Desk, Rainmaker, Together, Mournin' Glory Story, Little Cowboy, The Most Beautiful World In The World, and maybe others. Seems a growing number of new artists are picking up on Harry Nilsson these days. Brendan Rivers has self-released an album of covers tunes called, Songs For You, which features five Nilsson covers; "Without Her," "Jump Into The Fire," "Down," "The Moonbeam Song" & "Me And My Arrow." Hillary & The Democrats have posted an offbeat tribute to Harry at Bandcamp entitled, simply, "Harry Nilsson." You can listen to it below but it's not being made available for download.
Finally, Magic Hero Vs. Rock People have released a 5-song vinyl EP entitled Secret Enemies, and it features a most obscure Nilsson cover, "I Live In A World," which Harry never officially recorded (there's a demo on our Monkees Demos post). Unfortunately, we can't tell you what the track sounds like, as it's not available for listening or download. Someone from the band told us they've removed all their Facebook/MySpace links as part of an 'anti-promotion' campaign. Purchase here.
Long time readers of this blog know John Krane. We've posted his music before (wearing Harry's own robe, no less), and he has a new album, Sun Dog, that you can hear in its entirety here. Highly recommended to Paul Simon fans and lovers of song craft in general. Hear "Fire Winds," below.
There's been some recent chatter that Andrew Sandoval and Rob Santos are working with Sony on a 17-CD Nilsson Box Set set for release in 2012. All we've heard at this point is that Flash Harry is not included in this collection, but there will be bonus tracks and an additional disc of rarities.

All I can say is...let the good times roll!
Like many of the followers of Nilsson and this site, I grew up watching THE COURTSHIP OF EDDIE'S FATHER. We just hummed along with the theme song, and didn't know who Nilsson was. Then we watched a special on TV called THE POINT. We loved it too. Then we heard the song WITHOUT YOU and weren't sure what to think. Was it just pop? Was it too syrupy? What about that voice? Was there anything better? Maybe we also saw an X! movie, MIDNIGHT COWBOY, and thought the theme song was great. Wait, it is all the same person! Then we got all the vinyl and were hooked. We made sure we had the iron-on, the poster, or the booklet to complete the set. Then we moved on to other music. Check out this "degree of separation:" Nilsson=>Lennon=>Bowie=>Eno. From CUDDLY TOY to BABY'S ON FIRE in a few degrees. Or even simpler: Nilsson=>Badfinger. Music is our lifeblood, and we kept expanding our listening, and then found our way back to FTLOH! (and WW)! You keep our soul full! Please keep the site going. Even without links, the site is chock full of info that should always be there! By the way, thanks for the re-up!

I have some Harry stories to share down the road, and may be posting some unique things, too(I have to get some permissions!). I look forward to exploring the site even more deeply. Please keep up the great work. (BTW, I've turned a few people onto the site in recent weeks, and they all feel the same way.)
The file 'stuff' has, by the way, left Disc 20 (yikes!) of the Purple Chick set (Lost Decade Disc 2) orphaned - all links are dead. I went back to get 18-22 tonight and panicked, LOL!
